Venice is tightly connected to the sea, a maritime republic that was dominant at a time of complex cosmopolitanism emerging from the trade routes spanning across and out of the Mediterranean, and connected the empires of Europe, Asia Minor, Persia, Africa, and India through trade, culture, and science.

Today the complex reverberations of European expansion, imperialism, and colonialism is registered in the extractive economies of contemporary hyper-capitalism. The complex world-system associated with those turbulent processes is at the foundation of the successive tipping point of modernity that has unleashed the mobilization of energy, materials, people, ideas, and information that characterize the contemporary epoch of the Anthropocene.

The complex interconnections between material processes and economies of contemporaneity reveal how the cosmopolitan structures that once shaped Venice and its aspirations, are today an underlying, dirty set of political realities. They are deeply enmeshed in the militarization of the global supply chain connecting Asia and Europe, or the oil fields of the Middle East to Europe and the Americas.

A complex assemblage of data sets builds up a trajectory spanning from the North Atlantic across the continental shelf of the North Sea, through to Venice and its lagoon, and beyond to the Adriatic, the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea. The transformations it highlights rumble across a wide area and form new encounters with Africa, Arabia, and the northwest Indian Ocean. The same paths that connect these spaces are also the routes along which complex migrations are made, conflicts are unraveled, and aspirations of cohabitation encounter the difficult deeps of the oceans.

The trajectory hinges on and rotates out of Venice and its lagoon. The rapid sea level rises, the overfishing and oil extraction of the continental shelves, and new maritime protections and infrastructures are depicted in this cross-section of the seas as being intertwined with the complex turmoil shaping contemporary North Africa, Europe, and Asia.

From the waters of the Horn of Africa, across the Mediterranean and to the North Sea, vast changes are linked to events of a small scale, like the extreme Acqua alta in Venice, the release of ballast wa-ters, the rise of neobiota, and the complex links of human migration and the global supply chain of oil and goods. They form often undetected long-term connections linking the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic.
